ACADEMIC CURRICULUM ELECTIVES

AVID - (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
College preparatory program that instructs students in maximum competency material. Students learn skills in note taking, textbook reading, study skills, test taking, and library research skills while at the same time taking at least one (1) advanced course.

Prerequisite: interview and selection
Grade: 9th -12th
Credit: 1 unit

Academic Decathlon - (AcaDec)
This is an independent study course which addresses a variety of aspects of communication. The main thrust of the course is the intensive study of material related to the National Academic Decathlon contest in January and February of each year. This material includes language and literature, writing, speaking, interviewing, social studies, economics, art, music, and math. After this contest, students are involved in Interscholastic League Academic competition in March and April. The remainder of the school year is spent working on a variety of individual communications projects.

Concurrent College
The Concurrent College Program allows high school seniors to attend Angelina College for a portion of the school day while enrolled at Hudson High School. A student may take one or two college classes each semester. These classes may either be academic or technical/vocational. Students are required to take the TASP test before enrolling in an academic class and the Work Keys test before enrolling in a technical/vocational class. To be eligible for this program, a student must have an 85 average in core classes, have excellent attendance, passed all parts of the TAAS, and have completed TASP (or be exempt) or Work Keys testing. Student must complete an application and meet entrance requirements for college.

Cultural and Linguistic Topics
This class will study cultural, linguistics, geographical, or historical aspects of selected regions or countries.

Grade: 10th - 12th
Credit: 1/2 - 1 unit

Drafting and Design
Basic skills are taught, including the knowledge of design, techniques, and tools related to the production of drawings for mechanical applications.

Grade: 11th - 12th
Credit: 1 unit

Computer Aided Drafting - (CAD)
This class will enable students to draw objects on the computer with extreme precision. Students who enjoy drawing and mathematics would be excellent candidate for this challenging, but fun, class.

English as a Second Language - (ESL)
Designed for the student of limited English proficiency (LEP); that is, a student whose primary language is not English and/or who comes from a home where the primary language is other than English.

Prerequisite: Selection only
Grade: 9th - 12th
Credit: 1/2 or 1 unit

Psychology
The study of how knowledge, methods, and theories of psychologists are applied toward analyzing human behavior. Topics include the nature of psychology, human growth, development and behavior, and the development of the individual.

Prerequisite: one (1) year of social studies
Grade: 10th - 12th
Credit: 1/2 unit

Sociology
This is a study of individuals, groups, and social institutions. Topics include social stratification and the role of traditions in a society.
