HEALTH
OCCUPATIONS EDUCATION
(HOSA)
Health Occupations Education programs
are designed to provide classroom instruction and supervised
training for high school students preparing for employment in
occupational classifications relating to care of patients, prevention
of illness, and maintenance of health. These programs are conducted
cooperatively between the public school, hospitals, health agencies,
and health professionals.
Health
Science Technology 1
This
course includes skills related to the health care industry.
Contents include the various body systems and disease processes
related to each system. Patient relationships, working environments,
and ethical and legal responsibilities are also emphasized.
Entry level skills will also be developed for taking vital signs,
using medical terminology and other entry level skills needed
to participate in health occupations. Fee of $15.00 required
for HOSA membership.
Prerequisite: Biology 1 (concurrently
taking is acceptable)

Health
Science Technology 2 (Clinical Rotation)
This
course includes development and application of skills in a classroom
or clinical setting, relating to a group of health occupations.
The student will observe and/or give assistance to professional
health care personnel in a clinical environment. Limited to
15 students who are chosen by the instructor. Fee of $25.00
for uniform, $15.00 for HOSA membership, and $5.00 for TB test.

Biology 1 and selection

Credit: 2 units
Health Science Technology (Pharmacy Technician)
Occupationally specific course designed to provide knowledge
and skill for licensure as a Pharmacy Technician. Students will
have enough knowledge to acquire a job in a pharmacy and, if
they choose, take the exam after graduating from high school
to become a Licensed Pharmacy Technician. Students must be able
to manage Algebra 1 math skills. There is a fee involved with
this class.

HST 1, HST 2, Medical Terminology or Gerontology

Credit: 1 unit
Gerontology
This
course is designed to provide information of the aging process,
the physical, psycho-social, and nutritional needs of the elderly.
The student will develop skills to provide quality assessment
and care for the geriatric client. To assure students eligibility
for the Texas Department of Health Nurse Aide Certification,
both school-based and long term care facility training must
be provided.
Prerequisite: HST 1 or permission by the instructor

Medical Terminology
A course designed to develop a working knowledge of
the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills
by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. Knowledge
of medical terminology enhances the students' ability to successfully
secure employment or pursue advanced education in health care.
